How to File a Homeowner Claim

Insurance companies require the claim submitted in writing. Many websites allow this process on their websites. Immediately after sustaining the damage, submit the claim.

The home insurance company will send out an adjuster to inspect the damage and figure out proper compensation. Do not make any changes to the damaged property until after the adjuster is finished with his or her assessment; repairing or tampering with damage may result in a denied claim.

Sometimes house insurance companies will require the homeowner obtain estimates to repair the damage. For instance, if a homeowner has a chimney fire, the insurance company may ask them to obtain three estimates from chimney repair companies as to what they would charge to repair the damage. The adjuster will consider those quotes when figuring their compensation figure.

When the adjuster makes an offer, decide whether it is adequate to cover the repairs or not. Continuing with the above example, if the lowest estimate comes in at $3,000 and the insurance company only offers $2,000, the insured can dispute the amount and attempt to negotiate for more funds from the insurance company for the repair.

When the insurance company makes a satisfactory offer, the owner accepts the payment and the claim is closed.
